Extend Compassion: We really truly never know what someoe is going through

Hearing “Everybody Hurts” by R.E.M. again after 30+ years hit me in a completely different way.

Back then, it felt like survival. Just hold on… one moment at a time.

What I remember most wasn’t just the pain— it was the feeling of being completely separate. Disconnected. Alone. Like no one could possibly understand what I was going through.

What I didn’t know then… is what I know now: we are not separate. We are connected. We are ONE.

And that changes everything.

Today, I can look back at that chapter of my life without pain taking over. I see strength. I see resilience. I see a version of myself who chose to stay when it would have been easier not to.

And today? My life feels full, joyful… even magical.

But here’s what’s striking— so many people are hurting right now. And that hurt is showing up as anger, division, frustration, jealousy, even hate.

Because when we feel separate… we react.

We take things personally. We assume the worst. We meet pain with more pain.

But what if we paused for just a moment and remembered: Everybody hurts.

Even the people who look like they have it all together, like they have perfect lives. Even the ones who trigger us the most. Even the ones we don’t understand.

We truly never know what someone is going through and what pain they are carrying.

And when we shift from reaction to awareness, from separation to connection, we create space for something different:

Grace. Compassion. Love.

So if you’re hurting right now—just hold on. And if someone else is hurting… maybe we meet them there with a little more understanding instead of judgment.

Because maybe the real shift happens when we remember— I need to be the example. I need to change. And we’re not separate in this… we’re in it together.
